Mount Vernon, New York, had a great day of municipal celebration for afterschool program funding in the upwardly mobile suburban community just north of New York City. This historic community in Westchester, NY is home to 98 different ethnic groups where residents are use to enjoying year 'round festivals and sharing educational values and culture.
The progressive national, Afterschool Alliance organization's "Lights On Afterschool" initiative was welcomed yesterday by community, municipal and state leaders. Mt. Vernon youth, parents, school and community leaders with a rare sense of hope and forward-thinking as a community was elated with consensus and appreciation for the new funding. Research indicates that school-age children k-12 must be engaged from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in positive academic and enrichment activities while parents work.
Mount Vernon, New York is urban and suburban and typifies 21st century America with real struggles and yet it too is the best of what America offers when citizens work together and compete to partner with state and federal legislators and program leaders.
